The Education Ministry and the Examinations Department has forecast that the current education year would continue until early next year.

A senior official said that considering the current trend, they expect the last term to lead into the second week of January 2024.

However, considering 2022 when education terms continued until April 2023 it was an improvement, the official said.

He said the prolonged term had an adverse impact on conducting examinations.

“We would be able to schedule GCE A/L and O/L examinations on schedule if we are able to complete the school terms within the calendar year,” he added. The ministry plans to further reduce school holidays, instead of conducting additional classes, to adjust the academic year.

The school calendar was disrupted with the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, and then again disrupted due to the teachers’ strike, and the economic crisis which resulted in fuel and gas shortages. The Education Ministry has appealed to teacher trade unions not to disrupt school activities further. -DWI
