Organic fertiliser issue: Talks with China to recover USD 6.2mn
The Foreign Affairs Ministry has resumed talks with the Chinese Government to recover US$ 6.2 million which the Sri Lankan Government paid to purchase organic fertiliser, but was not able to receive the consignment due to an issue of contamination.
Agriculture Ministry Secretary Gunadasa Samarasinghe told the Sunday Times Foreign Affairs Minister Ali Sabry was holding talks with the Chinese Government and the Chinese company on how the losses to Sri Lanka could be mitigated.
He said the talks were being held to ascertain how the recovery could be made.
Mr Samarasinghe said an audit report on the issue had been submitted and they would be looking into the lapses as well in the transaction on the purchase of organic fertiliser.
The Cabinet had approved the payment of 6.2 million dollars to China’s Qingdao Seawin Biotech Group Co Ltd, whose organic fertiliser was rejected by Sri Lanka after the sample test failed.
Meanwhile, another audit report has been released on the purchase of nano fertiliser from India. This was questioned on the grounds that a higher price had been paid for it.
The Agriculture Ministry is due to finalise a report on both purchases from China and India and submit it to parliament next Thursday.
