Sri Lankans sure to rise from the crisis

As Sri Lanka has gone through many waves of struggles, disasters and walks of lives, people of the country believe they are much stronger now and hoping for a better future. It may be difficult at times, but the citizens of the country believe in their strength, culture and the history of this island to recover and not let it suffer as it has in the last few years, a senior US Rotarian Peter Tehan stated.

During a recent visit to Sri Lanka at the Port City in Colombo Mr. Peter told the Business Times that he has been following Sri Lanka and have walked the struggles people go through in this country. “There is a fight within the people, a fight to be strong and a fight to rebuild Sri Lanka. That is the inner strength the communities in Sri Lanka have. You don’t see people with this kind of energy elsewhere and that is the magic of Sri Lanka. We need to help the people of Sri Lanka to overcome the struggles, to become an economic and socio powerhouse in this part of the world,” he stressed.

Mr. Peter as a medical health professional was a respondent to the Tsunami victims back in 2004 together with seven teams. “I saw horror, destruction and the country’s struggle while I also saw the beauty and kindness among the people during the darkest days. People came together to help each other and I witnessed the presence of good people in a beautiful country. I always wanted to come back to Sri Lanka and that is why I and my colleague, John Ockenfels chose Sri Lanka as one of the stops during our 90 day journey to 21 countries and 39 cities.”

The duo flew to Sri Lanka on their private jet, a single engine piston driven aircraft, a CESSNA T10 and was invited to visit the Port City in Colombo last week. At the event they were briefed about the project which is expected to become operational in 20 years.

Mr. Peter stated, “With the completion of the Port City and becoming operational, modern health care facilities will evolve, new jobs will be offered, lots of development will take place in the country and tourism will flourish.”

Rotary Internationals’ goal is to eradicate Polio from the world. Today the disease is only present in Afghanistan and Pakistan. “We believe that by the time the Port City becomes operational, Polio will be eliminated from the earth. Every child born will see the success and grow from the benefits of the Port City,” noted Mr. Peter.
