American tourist arrested for flying drone over Maligawa
View(s):A “drone jammer” is the only solution to avoid drones been sent over the Sri Dalada Maligawa High Security Zone, say security officials administering the zone.
An American Tourist named Ahamed was recently arrested by the Maligawa Police and handed over to the Tourist Police on the allegation of flying a drone with a camera over the security zone of the Sri Dalada Maligawa.
He was produced in court and was subsequently ordered to be released, while the visuals on the drone’s camera were ordered to be erased before the drone was released.
The Police had no objections as he had admitted that he did know it was a security zone.
This is not the first time that a drone had been flown over the Sri Dalada Maligawa High Security Zone by unauthorised people.
The Police said it was a ‘must’ for anyone who wished to fly a drone with cameras over the Maligawa’s High Security Zone, to obtain prior approval from the Civil Aviation Authority or the Maligawa’s Chief Security Officer.
It was learned that the only authority who can destabilise a drone over the Maligawa was from the Mirigama Air Force Base, which had equipment to destabilise any Drone flying over Sigiriya or the Sri Dalada Maligawa.
The security officers said drone jammers were activated in the Sri Dalada Maligawa premises on special occasions, but hey added that a jammer should be installed in the premises permanently, as many locals and foreigners did not know that drones with cameras could not be flown over the temple.
Usually, Air Force helicopters or other flying objects were not flown over the Maligawa either.
