More than 800,000 appeals and objections for Aswesuma scheme
More than 800,000 appeals and objections have been filed with regard to the Aswesuma beneficiary scheme with the appeal period set to end tomorrow. Appeals have reached 815,000 while objections have risen to 10,000 State Finance Minister Shehan Semasinghe told The Sunday Times.
Beneficiaries are identified in two categories with the first being family-based and the second being for individuals such as the differently abled, the elderly and kidney patients, he added.
If a deserving beneficiary is left out from the finalised list, which has not been published yet due to the appeal process, they can apply for the August registration process, and they will be provided with funds for the month of July, he said.
No deadline has been set for the finalisation of the list.
Parliamentarians Jagath Kumara Sumithrarachchi and Kins Nelson have also raised concerns on the appeal process.
Complications in the appeal process have prompted deserving beneficiaries to submit appeals at respective district secretariats, they said.
Parliamentarian Sumithrarachchi told The Sunday Times that although the scheme was proposed with a genuine intention, it has currently failed to fulfill the needs of desperate people.
