The green, green grass of Linear Park

Linear Park, east of Beira Lake, is now in a run-down state.
The park which was declared open in November 2017 by then-President Maithripala Sirisena and then-Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has been left unattended.
The park’s entrance counters are closed and graffiti is written on its sides. The benches are overrun with weeds.
The cobblestoned walking paths too are overgrown with knee-high grass. The bakery and the eating areas in the park are in a similar state. The bakery’s counters are shattered.
The stagnant smell from the lake, due to the areas in the lake which had accumulated a high number of plastic bottles, is overpowering.
The washrooms are in an unappealing state with plastic bags, discarded items left at urinals and sink areas. Lockers are left open while heaps of plastic bags are piled near them.
The park was built under the concept of beautifying the Beira lake area and allowing people to spend time there leisurely.
