The Devi Balika Past Pupil’s Association celebrated a successful Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the school’s Dr. Wimala De Silva Auditorium. Unlike the previous year, when they were banned from entering the school at the last moment, this year’s AGM was well-attended by past pupils, teachers, and principals. Over 200 people, including the President of the association, Ms. H.T.C.D.P. Siriwardhana, gathered to witness the appointment of new committee officials.

The AGM, themed “Seventy Years of Excellence,” highlighted the school’s history and its focus on science and technology. Dr. Dayani Panagoda, Deputy President of the PPA, and Ms. Yashodha Wijesinghe, Deputy President of the JPPA, shared their experiences managing the associations and the challenges they faced. Dr. Panagoda called for unity among past pupils and emphasized the need for the association to work as a support arm of the school.

During the past year, the PPA and JPPA undertook various projects to support current students at Devi Balika Vidyalaya. They tripled the number of scholarships awarded under the Sisu Athwela program, which provides monthly financial assistance to students. Stationery allowances and hostel fee support programs were also continued. These initiatives were made possible by the generous contributions of past pupils.

The PPA organised several online events, including the “Sahitha Siyapath” programme, which allowed current students to interact with authors and foster their writing skills. The PPA also initiated the Library Automation project and established a helpline run by medical professionals to support past and present students and teachers with medical guidance. Additionally, the association created a platform to connect past students with career opportunities.

The AGM acknowledged the commitment and dedication of the outgoing committee members and welcomed the newly elected committee for the upcoming year. Dr. Dayani Panagoda will continue as Deputy President, supported by Prof. Meththika Vithanage as Vice President and Ms. Lenika Dharmarathne as Vice President. Ms. Ganga Dodangoda was appointed General Secretary, and Ms. N Hemangi Abeysinghe became the Treasurer. Ms. H.T.C.D.P. Siriwardhana will continue as the ex-officio President.

The JPPA also announced the continuation of its committee with a few changes. The AGM expressed gratitude to the outgoing members for their dedication and commitment. Newcomers to the committee were acknowledged and appreciated for their support.

The AGM concluded with lunch, photo sessions, and a joyful rendition of the past pupils’ song. The event showcased the unity and unwavering support of past pupils, reaffirming their commitment to the betterment of Devi Balika Vidyalaya.
