Minister vows to reverse Covid-driven downfall in primary education
View(s):- Says new methods to be introduced to take the standards to international level
The COVID-19 pandemic was a major reason for the downfall of the primary education system, Education Minister Susil Premajayantha has said.
Addressing the prize-giving ceremony of Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya on Thursday, he said the lack of trained teachers had caused a severe downfall in primary education.
He said special attention would be given by the Ministry to monitoring the teachers’ performance and assessing their capabilities and qualifications.
The minister said a major transformation would occur in the education system next year with more practical-based methods being included in the syllabi to raise education standards to international levels.
With the implementation of the new method, the pressure and stress due to studies would be reduced, he said.
The minister said steps would be taken to hold the three main government examinations—the grade 5 scholarship exam, the G.C.E. Ordinary Level Examination, and the G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination—within a scheduled timeframe, as had been the case before the pandemic.
