Aeroflot flight incident: SC to hold inquiry against lawyer

View(s):

The Supreme Court has decided to hold an inquiry against a lawyer accused of misrepresenting an enjoining order issued by the Colombo Commercial High Court to detain a Russian Aeroflot flight last year.

The SC bench comprising Justice Preethi Padman Surasena, Kumudini Wickremasinghe and Janak De Silva fixed the hearing into the complaint made against the lawyer, for December 6 after rejecting a preliminary objection made by the defendant’s counsel Romesh De Silva, PC.

Romesh De Silva, PC argued that an inquiry could not be held against his client as there was no complainant, and that there was only a sworn affidavit submitted to the Justice Minister by a Deputy Director General of the Civil Aviation Authority. The court, however, rejected this objection.

The lawyer is accused of compelling the Acting Head of Air Navigation Services, to detain the Aeroflot flight at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) on June 2, 2022. He is accused of doing so by misrepresenting the order issued by the Colombo Commercial High Court.
