The first Aswesuma payment will most likely be made in August to those whose inclusion has not been challenged, State Finance Minister Shehan Semasinghe said.
A fixed date has not been announced yet, as an evaluation of appeals and objections is still in progress.
An analysis of the appeals and objections so far have revealed that of the 986,000 appeals received around 350,000 beneficiaries had not been included in the published list.
About 650,000 appeals are from current beneficiaries who have requested an increase in the allowance.
“Significantly 650,000 appeals have been received by the individuals whose names are already in the published list demanding to upgrade their names from the category they are already in, to a category with more benefits” the Presidential Secretariat said.
The government is expected to spend an estimated Rs. 206 billion annually on the Aswesuma Beneficiary Scheme.
Applications for the 2024 Aswesuma Scheme will be out on August 1.
Meanwhile protests by Samurdhi Officials calling to suspend the Aswesuma programme was held in-front-of the Colombo Fort railway station last Monday (July 10).
