Japan’s Foreign Minister to visit Sri Lanka for high-level talks
View(s):Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi will visit Sri Lanka next week.
It is the first ministerial visit from Tokyo to Colombo since 2019. The Harvard-educated senior politician from Japan is expected to hold talks on the ongoing debt restructuring process which is co-chaired by the Japanese government, and new avenues of bilateral cooperation following the visit of President Ranil Wickremesinghe to Tokyo in late May.
The Japanese Foreign Minister’s visit on July 28 and 29, with a delegation of 24 personnel, is the first high-level tour from a country outside the South Asian region since last year, and is expected to enhance the scope of relations between Sri Lanka and Japan. The visiting delegation is expected to hold talks with the President, the Prime Minister and the Foreign Minister.
During a recent visit to Akita, Sri Lanka’s Ambassador Rodney Perera discussed with Japan’s Foreign Minister Hayashi potential projects under the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) signed between the two countries, and mutual efforts to promote private sector tie-ups under the bilateral agenda.
