The Eppawala based Lanka Phosphate Limited’s (LPL) Supply Officer who was allegedly assaulted in the presence of Primary Industries State Minister Chamara Sampath Dasanayake claims he has been made a scapegoat for the corrupt behaviour and inferior performance of the company’s management.

Supply Officer Ashoka Abeysiri, who was allegedly assaulted, told the Sunday Times that the LPL has become a den of corruption.

The officer was accused by some employees of causing a massive loss to the company by importing a spare part for a grinding machine that was not a necessity.

“I have no direct power over purchasing any product the company is in need of. At the time of purchase it should be approved under the procurement procedure and by the Tender Board. Any tender of the present Chairperson is not legal. She even signs the relevant contracts rejecting presented recommendations. Yet, I was made out to be a thief in front of the public and the media of the country,” he claimed.

Mr. Abeysiri alleged this was an intentional attack by the Chairperson of Lanka Phosphate and its employees. He plans to take legal action in this regard.

He said the Police had referred his complaint over the alleged assault to the Mediation Board.

“But this is not something that should go to the Mediation Board. This is something that should go to court. I have also filed a complaint with the Secretary of the concerned ministry about this. But still no disciplinary investigation has been conducted. The employee who assaulted me is still at work although I have received an interdiction. I am challenging the organisation that I can prove this relevant tender is wrong,” Mr. Abeysiri said.

When contacted, an official of LPL said an investigation is currently in progress in respect to the matter. The State Minister was not available for comment.
