Thirimanne retires from international stage
Former Sri Lanka Test opener Lahiru Thirimanne has announced his retirement from international cricket.
“It has been an absolute honour to represent my country for past few years. This game that has given me so much over the years. But with a lot of mixed feelings, I am here to announce my retirement from international cricket with an immediate effect,” read a message on his official facebook page.
“It was a difficult decision to make, but I cannot mention here the many unexpected reasons that influenced me to take this decision willingly or unwillingly,” the message reads.
Thirimanna, who has migrated to Australia, last played for
Sri Lanka in 2022 against India in a Test match and since then he has been out of selectors’ radar. The 33-year-old scored 2088 runs off 44 Tests, 3194 runs in 127 ODIs and 291 in 26 T20 internationals. Thirimanne played a pivotal role in Sri Lanka winning the Asia Cup in 2014 against Pakistan, hitting a match-winning century (101) to chase down 261 and also part of Sri Lanka’s T20 World Cup triumph in the same year.
“And my fans, supporters, journalists for all the love, support and motivation you have given me over these years. I am forever grateful to you all,” he added.
