A former shipping manager of Harrison & Crossfields, A.S. Mohamed, a father figure affectionately called Mohamed Uncle, passed away on June 26 at the age of 85. In keeping with Islamic tradition, his funeral took place on the same day at Mawilmada Muslim burial ground, close to Kandy.

Days before his sudden and peaceful death, he visited Colombo and met many of his friends.

Mohamed Uncle, loved and respected by all, is no more

Mohamed Uncle was a pioneer Sri Lankan who moved to Dubai in 1977 and was highly respected by community members in the United Arab Emirates and Sri Lanka. In Dubai, he worked for Mohamed Fayad, the former owner of the world-renowned department store Harrods in London. Fayad’s son, Dodi Fayad, died with Princess Diana in a car accident in Paris in August 1997.

Serving others had been his prime concern in life since his early days. As part of this policy, he, together with others, formed the Serendib Scholarship Fund, SEF, more than three decades ago in Dubai to collect money and help poor and needy students continue their studies.

This project touched the hearts of many as it brightened the lives of hundreds of men and women who now serve in many capacities in many fields. So much so that his last words to his daughter Azra were about a scholarship letter.

A symbol of inspiration, he advocated human values. His loss is deeply felt by his family, friends, colleagues, and the community at large.
