University of Peradeniya undergraduates could learn the Russian language, said Vice Chancellor Professor M D Lamawansa at the university’s first ‘Russian Day’ held in collaboration with the Russian Embassy in Colombo.

Addressing invitees at the Russian Day at the Senate Room of the university, Professor Lamawansa recalled the ties between Russia and Sri Lanka, and the long-standing relationship of the two countries. He added that the Russian language was becoming important and that there is scope for undergraduates to learn the language through which they could also learn the historical background of the people and the country.

First Secretary of the Russian Embassy in Colombo Maria L Popova declared open a section of Russian books in the Kannangara Building, where the classical language section is situated.
