Government to impose restrictions on state employee vehicles
View(s):By Damith Wickremasekara
The Government will impose fresh restrictions on the use of leased vehicles for State employees – including the limiting of one vehicle per officer – in an effort to cut down expenses.
A Cabinet paper is to be submitted on the restrictions following revelations that officers were making use of 2-3 vehicles, with some using up to 6 vehicles, and some vehicles being used by family members.
The new restrictions will be applicable to Defence services as well, Government sources said.
The Government has taken into consideration that vehicles were being leased at Rs 300,000 per month without taxes. Currently around 1,000 vehicles have been leased; 400 are up
for renewal.
The Government also plans to encourage public sector employees to use their own vehicles or find their own mode of transport by increasing the existing allowance of Rs 50,000
per month.
Among other restrictions to be imposed would be the limitation of the fuel allowance. Officers would only be able to make use of the fuel allowance given to them, and would not be able to pump fuel from the Ministry or Department they serve.
A restriction on vehicle capacity too would be introduced. The highest capacity would be 1,600 CC for Secretary-level and 1,200 CC for lower-level officials. The move will prevent the use of luxury vehicles.
