View(s):By Hiran Priyankara Jayasinghe
Puttalam is experiencing an unprecedented drought, the worst in the district since 2012.
The area last received a shower in early May and since then the heat and dry weather conditions have prevailed.
Hundreds of paddy fields have been affected in the area, making farmers economically unstable. Even irrigation tanks are affected. A number of bush fires are spreading. This has affected the coconut plantations.
In Puttalam some 25,000 coconut trees have died without water.
Farmer Gamini Jayalath said: “We got rain last May. Now the lakes are dry and irrigation is not possible. We have spent all our money on the paddy fields. Officials are also helpless.”
District Secretary S P Herath pointed out that the drought was spreading. “We hope to provide drinking water to people.”
The drought has also affected the animal population.
