Better than ever, Sri Lanka Airport & Aviation Academy…
View(s):The Sri Lanka Airport & Aviation Academy (SLAAA), the training institution operated by Airport & Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) (Pvt) Ltd., is now a gateway to earn an internationally recognised Bachelor’s degree in Aviation Management. The prestigious Massey University of New Zealand now offers transfer credits to holders of the Diploma in Aviation Management offered by the academy to join the 2nd year of their degree programme at a discounted fee.
SLAAA is registered as a vocational training provider with the Tertiary and Vocational Education commission of Sri Lanka. It is also the only Approved Training Organisation (ATO) by the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka (CAASL) for conducting training for the grant of Air Traffic Controller Licence with the requisite ATC ratings issued by the Director General of Civil Aviation, Sri Lanka. Holding the membership of the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s TRAINAIR PLUS programme since 2014, puts the SLAAA in the world map.
In 2011, the SLAAA commenced the first ever Diploma programme in Aviation Studies conducted by a Sri Lankan state institution. This programme targeted the large population of ‘A’ level qualified youngsters who are aspiring for avenues of tertiary education. After successfully completing of the diploma programme, they can either join Massey University for higher education or work in the aviation and its allied industries. For those who couldn’t complete the ‘A’ Levels but had passed the ‘O’ Levels in either local or London syllabus, can now follow the Foundation in Aviation Management programme offered by SLAAA and on completion can join the diploma programme. The first intake of the foundation programme will commence in this month.
The recognition of the diploma programme for credit transfer by Massey University which was brought about through the initiative of Major General (Retd.) G A Chandrasiri, Chairman AASL, has given a new dimension to the programme. Since there are no degree programmes dedicated to aviation offered by the state universities at present, this programme provides a unique, viable and convenient avenue for A/L qualified Sri Lankans to earn a degree in aviation carrying worldwide recognition. Ms. Rashmi Weerasinghe, the first student to start reading for the Bachelor’s degree with Massey University through this path said “this is my lifetime dream coming true. I’m eagerly waiting to complete my degree and join world aviation”.
With the insight of new Head of the academy, Mr. Kishantha Nimalaratne, the O/L qualified Sri Lankans are given the opportunity to follow the diploma programme if they successfully complete the 3-month foundation programme. “Our aim is to educate all in aviation. Young kids can follow our Aviation for Youngsters programme and teenagers can follow Aviation for Teenagers programme. Once you passed O/L, follow the Foundation and join the Diploma. That would be your gateway to higher education in New Zealand” says Mr. Nimalaratne. SLAAA collaboration with Massey University would be a symbol of the highest standards in education that both institutions strive to maintain at all times.
