Compulsory courses for students after GCE O/L and A/L to prep them for employment
View(s):The Education Ministry will soon introduce compulsory courses for English and Information Technology for students who complete the GCE O/L and A/L exams.
The students will be required to follow the courses soon after completing their examination until the results are released.
They would also be given the option of selecting a job-oriented vocational training course during the period.
An Education Ministry senior official said that a Cabinet paper would be submitted to start the course as a pilot project in 320 schools across the country for those completing the O/L examination. Thereafter, the courses will be expanded to other schools.
The first of the courses are due to commence in September.
The O/L students’ course will be for a duration of four months, and A/L courses for a six month period. The duration for the A/L students have been extended considering that some of them would have a waiting period until they get University admission.
The Ministry plans to use the same staff for teaching English and IT, while vocational training expertise will be sought from outside.
The objective of the courses is to retain the students within the school system until results are received while preparing
them for future employment opportunities.
The vocational training courses will differ from school to school and area. (DWI)
