Pre-schools will not be permitted to operate if their director and teaching staff have not obtained recognised qualification in Montessori education, Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said.

He said there are about 19,000 pre-schools in the country with a teacher population of about 40,000.

“In countries like Japan, pre-school education is given priority as they provide guidance for primary education. The State ministry for Pre-school and Primary Education will provide training and prepare internationally-accepted curriculum for pre-schools. All pre-schools will be required to follow it,” the Minister said.

Teachers and teacher assistants who do not have qualifications will be required to follow a Diploma in Montessori Education offered by the State.

“In order to train students from a young age, the Ministry introduced spoken English for Grade 1 students. We trained 13,800 Grade 1 teachers last year, and another 13,800 are currently undergoing training,” Minister Premajayantha said.
