View(s):

Inadequate funding for research and innovation, lack of qualified staff due to low remuneration, brain drain, delay in embracing new technology are some of the challenges faced by the country’s vocational education sector.

The Annual Performance Report 2022 of the Skills Development, Vocational Education, Research and Innovation Division of the Education Ministry also stated the lack of updated policies and strategies to attract private sector contribution to research and development in the country as a major challenge.

Research commercialisation issues, inadequate international collaborations, low enrollment due to the financial crisis in the country were cited as some obstacles in achieving progress in vocational education.

The brain drain of scientists and researchers is also a growing concern to the skills development and innovation sector.

Difficulties in gaining industry cooperation to strengthen the Industry Sector Skills Councils to encourage more training, delay in acquiring new technology into Government training institutes, and difficulties in completing ongoing development projects due to insufficient funding, were also highlighted in the performance report.

Limited budget allocation for sector development activities, insufficient facilities to promote vocational education and lack of qualified staff due to low pay were also highlighted as challenges for the vocational education sector in the country.
