Barbie mania sweeping the charts

Barbie mania is sweeping across many parts of the world, thanks to the box office hit film on the famous Mattel doll. Music from ‘Barbie: The Album’ is dominating the UK singles chart top 10 this week as three songs make their presence felt strongly. Billie Eilish at No: 3 with ‘What Was I Made For’, Dua Lipa at No: 4 with ‘Dance The Night’ and the combination of Nicki Minaj, Ice Spice and Aqua at No: 5 with ‘Barbie World’.

Coincidentally the three songs are next to each other on the top 10. Leading the way this week is ‘What Was I Made For?’ by Billie Eilish which advanced from 10 to No: 3 after debuting last week. Billie stays true to her style with the song in slow movement on a track co-written with her brother Finneas O’ Connell.

‘Dance The Night’ by Dua Lipa advanced from 15 to No: 4 this week. Lipa has written the disco track with Caroline Ailin, and the track’s producers are Andrew Wyatt and the famous Mark Ronson. ‘Dance The Night’ keeps to the disco beat of the hits from Dua Lipa’s last album ‘Future Nostalgia’.

At No: 5 is ‘Barbie World’ by Nicki Minaj, Ice Spice and Aqua, which advanced to the top ten this week from No:20 the previous week. The rap track contains the sub-genres of Jersey Club and drill coupled with the Eurobeat sample throughout faintly of Aqua’s 1997 hit, ‘Barbie Girl’. Hence the Danish group’s members Lene Nystrom, Claus Norreson, Johnny Pederson and Karsten Dahlgaard share credit on the current hit ‘Barbie World’ with rappers Nicki Minaj, Ice Spice and songwriter Ephrem Louis Lopez Jr.

This is the third time three songs from a movie soundtrack have featured on a single week on the UK top 10 singles chart. Saturday Night Fever and Grease did it in 1979 while the animated film Encanto had the honour in 2022.

Cardi B throws mic at fan

US rap artist Cardi B threw a microphone at a fan at a Las Vegas concert in retaliation for a drink being thrown at her. The 30-year-old was performing at the Drai Beachclub on July 29 when the incident took place and Cardi B reacted by hurling her microphone back at the fan and called out the fan.

Incidents of this nature have been frequent in recent months. On July 26 a wallet was thrown at Drake while he was on stage at Madison Square Garden, New York. Harry Styles also suffered an eye injury when an object was hurled at him while on stage in Vienna, Austria last month. In June, Bebe Rexha was injured and required hospitalisation after a fan threw a mobile phone at her while she was performing in New York. Other artists have been victims too recently.
