From Paintbrush to Blueprint: Unleashing Architectural Dreams at the University of Melbourne
View(s):In an ever-growing world, Bachelor of Design student, Kisara Gayanuka Attygalle, knew that the University of Melbourne would be the best place for him to evolve into the architect he dreamed of becoming. Graduating from S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia, Kisara was immediately attracted by the University’s high academic standards. Recognised as Australia’s leading University, it has recently climbed from 33 to 14 in the latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings and is now the highest ranked Australian university across the three major global rankings – QS (14), Times Higher Education (34) and the Academic Ranking of World Universities (32).
The University of Melbourne Vice Chancellor Duncan Maskell said it was satisfying to see that it had performed so well in the latest QS Rankings, which “reaffirmed that Australian universities are among the very best in the world.” This presence is only bolstered by the reputation of Melbourne itself, wherein it places as the third most liveable city in the world in The Economists’ 2023 Liveability rankings.
It was a clear choice for Kisara, as was his chosen pathway. “Architecture is a highly versatile but also a fundamental vocation”, one which was inspired by his initial passion for art. As he says, “I fell in love with the wonders that a paintbrush and a little bit of imagination can create…and took on a personal creative endeavour to learn how to sketch.” Quickly, he was able to make the connection to architecture as, “buildings are similar to sketches but on a grander scale.”
Kisara’s university experience has also been made all the easier when he was recognised for academic excellence and received a Melbourne International Undergraduate Scholarship. Awarding recipients with an $10,000 AUD fee remission, the scholarship “helps reduce the burden that comes with the costs of living”, says Kisara. Offered automatically to the top 3% of international student applicants, this is just one of the many scholarship opportunities that the University has on offer.
This, however, is just the first step toward Kisara’s ultimate goals. Upon completing his Bachelor degree in 2024, he intends to gain some experience in the field before returning to gain a masters qualification and become a charted architect. With the University of Melbourne placing 8th in the QS graduate employability rankings, Kisara knows that “the knowledge and experience I’ll obtain will allow me to excel as well as build up a comprehensive network of well-educated individuals from all walks of life due to the diversity present at the University.”
When asked what advice he would give to other international students looking to study at the University of Melbourne, Kisara affirmed that this was the strongest choice for his future. “Initially, it’s going to be a big lifestyle change, however, the best advice I could give would be to get ready for the best years of your life.”
