Teach students safe use of medicines

A team of medical experts has recommended Education authorities create awareness among students on the safe use of medicines, especially antibiotics.

Among the recommendations made by the ‘Expert Committee to investigate recent incidence of drug allergies and their aftereffects’, is to establish a mechanism to educate school students across the country on allergies and the safe use of medicines/antibiotics. The Committee said the teaching should focus on students in Grade 10 and 11.

The Committee is headed by Medical Research Institute (MRI) Director Dr Dedunu Dias. Other members include Prof of Allergy and Immunology Chandima Jeewandara, Prof in Pharmacology Priyadharshani Galappaththi, Consultant Emergency Physician Dr Senitha Liyanage, Prof in Pharmacy Nithushi Samaranayake, Prof in Nursing S S P Warnakulasuriya and Asia Pacific Association of Allergy, Asthma and Clinical Immunology Director Dr Phillip H Li.
