Bringing Broadway to Kandy

Kolam Studios which started off in March this year with their sights set on inspiring drama enthusiasts and students to hone their skills in theatre, will present their first ever public performance on Friday, August 18 at the Trinity College Main Hall.

‘Come Alive! The Broadway Spectacular’ is an ensemble of some of the most popular Broadway hits through the years.

Comprising a group of school leavers and students from various schools in Kandy, Kolam Studios first step was to offer their services to schools without a wide outreach of drama facilities and experience. They began conducting a series of workshops and practice sessions with the objective of teaching students the various aspects of drama, instilling in them the knowledge of how to perform on a stage and ways to uplift their theatrical talents.

Among the team spearheading Kolam Studios are Rahul Jayasinghe (President), Parami Athukorala (Secretary), Gesith Epa (Treasurer), Asini Ratwatte (Head of Logistics) and Chaithri Kalupahana (Head of Public Relations).

“Come Alive! The Broadway Spectacular” will present songs from some of the most renowned musicals, such as The Sound of Music, numbers from more modern hits such as Hamilton and The Greatest Showman to classic Disney songs from Beauty and the Beast and Frozen.

Combining the talents of members of Kolam Studios and students from various schools in Kandy, the musical has been conceptualized with creative costumes and lively dances, channelling the essence of drama and music that embodies the Broadway experience.

“Come Alive! The Broadway Spectacular” is on August 18 at 7 p.m. at the Trinity College Main Hall. Tickets priced ar Rs. 2,500, 1,500, 1200 and 1,000 are available the Sarasavi bookshop at KCC.
