13 PT-6 planes grounded after deadly crash
View(s):The fleet of 13 PT-6 aircraft would remain grounded until initial investigations are completed by the Sri Lanka Air Force board of officers with expertise in aircraft accident investigations.
This follows the crash that killed Wing Commander Herath Mudiyanselage Tharindu Kanishka Herath and engineering officer Peshan Warnasooriya on Monday, August 7. Eyewitness accounts and statements of the duty crew at the China Bay airport in Trincomalee are being recorded.
Sources said the aircraft that crashed was put into service in 2018 and was manufactured in the same year. It was used for training aviators. The plane had done more than 850 flying hours and had around 3,000 flying hours remaining to complete its 4,000-hour service period.
The late Wg Cdr Herath was born in May 1985 and studied at Maliyadeva Boys College in Kurunegala. His widow is a doctor. They have three children.
He had joined as an officer cadet in 2006 and became a pilot the following year. He had been awarded the Sevabhimani Padakkama, Sava Padakkama, 75th Independence Anniversary Commemoration Medal, East Humanitarian Campaign Medal, North Humanitarian Campaign Medal, and Purna Bhumi Padakkama for his services.
Officer Warnasooriya had studied at St Anne’s College. He joined the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University in 2017, and then joined the Air Force as an engineer.
