The annual Vel Festival of the Murugan Temple in Slave Island was held last week.
The festival is dedicated to Lord Murugan “Kataragama Deviyo” who is also known as Skanda, and Arumugan.
During the festival, devotees carry the statue of the God within the kovil premises.
While taking the statue out of the Kovil the devotees shower the statue with lotus petals. Afterwards they transfer the statue of their deity onto a huge decorated cart which takes the form of a palanquin and carry out their puja. Both men and women form two queues and pull the palanquin forward in procession to express their respects to the God.
The procession was made spectacular with colourful traditional dance items such as peacock dances with persons dressed similar to peacocks.
