Vegetable cultivation in the Kattukachchi area in Anamaduwa has been severely affected by a pest epidemic.
One of the area’s farmers said he spent Rs 1.5 million on his brinjal cultivation including investing in pesticides, which were of low quality.
Only 3000 kilos have been harvested from the area, and the whole plot has been encroached by pests.
Even cultivations that had been conducted for 11 years had been affected.
“We have never experienced this kind of pest attacking our vegetable plots,” one farmer said.
“Those days the pesticides controlled the pest epidemic but this time due to sub-par standard pesticides being used, our plots have been ruined. We have spent Rs 400,000 on pesticides, but could not get proper pesticides. If the pest epidemic did not happen, we could have received Rs five million as income,” he added.
