The Education Ministry has sought Chinese help to implement the Smart Class Room project across 1,500 schools in the country.

Education Minister Susil Premajayantha made a three-day visit to China where he met with Chinese Government representatives among others. The Minister addressed the ‘Digitization of Education’ summit in China.

Minister Premajayantha told the Education Times that under the new reforms, 1,250 clusters of schools would be formed and they hope to provide at least one Smart Class Room for each of the clusters. The plan was to gradually increase the number of Smart Class Rooms.

He explained that under the school digitization programme they would require Smart Boards, and they were expecting Chinese assistance for the project. Minister Premjayantha added that they expect to cover a major share through Chinese assistance.

A senior official of the Education Ministry said that the project to provide smart boards to schools was affected due to the Covid-19 situation, and now they were in the process of reviving the programme.

The plan, he said, was to start with providing Smart Boards for O/L and A/L classes, and gradually have them in all classes from Grade 6 upwards.

He said the availability of the Smart Boards will help to share information with other schools and will be useful in teaching science subjects.

Currently most Smart Boards in schools were received as private donations and through past pupil associations. (DWI)
