How To Prepare For A Job Interview

Introduction – A job interview is an opportunity to secure a lucrative life changing moment. Hence, preparation is essential to have the best chance of success. In this brief article, my endeavour is to provide a few important tips in the preparation process.

Preparation For a Job Interview

1.  Do your Homework on the Prospective Company – Study the background in terms of history, products and services, customer profiles and industry sectors. Be prepared to answer pertinent questions, to demonstrate your proactiveness.

2.  Do a Pre-Check on the Location – There is nothing worse than to turn up late for an interview, due to difficulties in locating the address.

3.  Check for any Known Contacts in the Prospective Company – This is important in case the question is posed such as “Do you know anyone working here?” “Do you have any relatives working here?”

4.  Plan your Attire – You need to create a powerful “first impression.” Hence, your attire is important. Is the interview in the morning, afternoon or evening? The choice of colours in your attire will depend on this.

5.  Plan your Documents – Which documents will you need at the interview? Copies of your CV (at least 2), testimonials, certificates (educational, professional etc.,). All documents need to be carried in a professional manner, in a document folder.

6.  Proactively Think about the Questions that will be Posed – Prepare answers and be ready to respond effectively. This will create a very positive impression and perception.

7.  Inform your Referees in Advance – Never assume that your referees are in agreement to be exposed at every organization. Certain referees maybe disadvantageous to you, due to certain reasons.

8.  Mentally Visualize the Interview – This will reduce the nervousness and boost your confidence at the interview.

9.  Provide Adequate Time to Travel and Settle Down at the Location – This will help you relax before the interview and perform better. If necessary take a day off from work, to mentally tune-in.

10.          Know your Salary Expectations and Other Perks – Do your homework to ascertain your value in the market. Be able to justify your salary and perks requested by you.

11.          Be Clear if there are Assessments – Does the interview process involve examinations, assessments, presentations? If yes, you need to be clear of what the expectations are and be prepared.

12.          Try and Find Out the Interview Panel – You have the right to inquire from the HR Division/Department of the prospective employer, regarding the interview panel. (How many and who they are). Please remember that they already have an insight about you, through the CV submitted. Hence it is your right to know the panel you will be facing.

Conclusion – Being prepared provides you the best chance of success, at an interview. Give your best shot and do not leave room for regrets. Enjoy the experience and improve your skills by facing job interviews.
