President committed to introducing new education system
View(s):The country’s Gen Z has been handed over to the Education Minister, and now the education system should be ready to cater to the Gen A in another decade’s time, President Ranil Wickremesinghe said.
Generation Z is the latest generation, born between 1997 and 2012. Generation Alpha (Gen A) are children born in 2012 and will continue at least through 2025.
Addressing a school prize-giving ceremony this week, the President said he is committed to introducing a new education system to the country.
He added that climate change and new areas in science and technology such as AI, robotics, energy storage and genome technology should be introduced to school education.
These new technology advancements will bring a value of about 300-700 trillion US dollars to the global economy, the President said.
He said students should learn English as well as other languages like Mandarin and Hindi.
Establishing non-State and foreign universities here will not hinder higher education opportunities for local students, as student loans will be made available for those seeking higher education, President Wickremesinghe said.
He said the setting up of universities not funded by the State and higher education institutions will be encouraged. (NF)
