Poachers are making use of the prevailing drought conditions to kill more animals by poisoning water holes, wildlife officers told the Sunday Times.

They said they have detected a racket where a group of poachers used the tactic of poisoning water holes in the Yala National park bordering the Sella Kataragama area. They said that they learned that the poachers also sold the meat of the animals killed by poisoning. The officers said the bush meat was sent to many areas.

The officials pointed out that the poisoned bush meat could pose a threat to the health or lives of those who consumed it.

As the availability of water becomes scarce, poachers have started to dig holes near water holes closed to dried up tanks and mixed poisonous substances.

The wildlife officers said that though they found many carcasses of animals killed due to poisoning they were yet to find the suspects.

The officials believe that the bush meat business of animals killed by poisoning was targeting mainly the pilgrims and requested people to notify them if they learned of persons involved in the act of poisoning animals.
