Next Census this year on digital tablet computers
View(s):For the first time in its history spanning more than 150 years, the Department of Census and Statistics is to use digital tablet computers, alongside traditional printed documents, for data collection for the 15th Census of Population and Housing 2023-2024.
The listing phase of the census is set to begin later this year, followed by the enumeration phase next year, the department said. The Population and Housing Census consists of a comprehensive tally of all individuals and existing residences in the country over a specific timeframe ensuring that no person or residence is omitted or counted twice.
The Population and Housing Census is considered the main source of official data for obtaining population and housing information down to the Grama Niladhari Division level, the department said.
For this year’s census, around 16,000 enumerators will be recruited, all of whom will be public sector employees. Training of officers involved in the listing stage has already been started at Divisional Secretariat offices.
Census taking in Sri Lanka dates back to the late 19th century when estimates of the population had been made from time to time prior to 1871 on the basis of returns made by village headmen. Sri Lanka has the longest history of Census takings among South Asian countries.
The last – the 14th Census — was conducted in 2012 covering the entire country 31 years after the end of armed conflict in North-Eastern provinces. At that time, the total population of the country was 20,359,439, a gradual and over eight-fold increase since 1871.
