Following the donation by Emeritus Professor Gananath Obeyesekere, Professor of Anthropology of his personal collection of books to the University of Peradeniya Library, a ceremony of appreciation for Prof. Obeyesekere and Prof. Ranjini Obeyesekere was held at the Library Auditorium on August 9.
The books spanning many disciplines were displayed, mostly volumes on anthropology, psychology, culture, art and philosophy.
Mr. R. Maheshwaran, the Librarian thanked Prof. Obeysekere for his magnanimous gesture of donating his valuable collection to the library, which will help to enlighten the minds of students.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya, Prof. T. Madhujit spoke on the importance of reading books and noted that students need to use the library more often.
The other speakers from the University were Dr. Rohitha Dassanayake, Act. Dean Faculty of Arts, Prof. Amarakeerthi Liyanage, Prof. of Sinhala at the Dept. of Sinhala and Prof. Dhammika Herath, Professor of Sociology, Dept. of Sociology.

The ceremony came to a close with Prof. Gananath reciting extracts from the last six verses of H.W. Auden’s poem ‘In Memory of W.B. Yeats’ – on his death, which was an insightful observation of the occasion, as well as a commentary on the contemporary situation.
