Edu. Minister hopes to recruit retired teachers
View(s):Education Minister Susil Premajayantha will submit a Cabinet paper seeking permission to recruit retired teachers to serve in schools, for selected subjects, in view of the current shortages.
Among the teachers who would be recruited would be teachers required to teach Science, Maths, English and technology. In addition, English medium teachers for Science, Technology and Accountancy would also be recruited.
The Ministry will seek approval to grant two-year contracts for the recruited teachers. This move comes in the wake of a severe shortage of teachers, with several recruitment drives put on hold due to several court cases.
Minister Premajayantha told Parliament that the recruitment programmes have been put on hold in view of several Stay Orders obtained in courts.
He said some of the Stay Orders had been granted for prolonged periods. One of the petitions filed in courts is that the recruitment age should be increased to above 40 years.
The Minister suggested that the Justice Ministry bring amendments to the Civil procedures giving an interpretation on Stay Orders.
Recruitment of some 52,000 teachers have been frozen in view of the court cases, resulting in a severe teacher shortage in schools.
Parents and students, mainly in the outstations, have held several protests on this issue.
The shortage has delayed the commencement of GCE (A/L) classes too.
Minister Premajayantha pointed out that the delay in recruitment has caused a severe injustice to students.
