View(s):CfPS Law School has once again demonstrated academic excellence at the recently concluded University of London Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) examination with several students being awarded Second Class Upper Divisions and Seven students receiving distinctions for their respective subjects.
In 2022, CfPS Law School was the only recognised teaching institution of the University of London in
Sri Lanka which produced a First-Class Honours Degree in Law.
CfPS Law School is a Registered Centre of the University of London for its Bachelor of Laws Degree and the Certificate of Higher Education in Common Law (formerly known as the Diploma in Law), in Sri Lanka. The Law School is centrally located at Dharmapala Mawatha in Colombo 7.
The prestigious University of London LL.B. offers students an opportunity not only to enter the legal profession, but also to venture into other fields where a sound learning of the law is a necessity. It also helps students develop many other skills that are useful in employment. Students in Sri Lanka are provided with access to the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) of the University providing numerous online resources for each subject including access to the online libraries of the University of London.
A Law Degree from the University of London opens up a pathway to enter the legal professions in Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom. However apart from this, those in many other fields such as medicine, engineering, accountancy, management, and marketing look to a law degree to enhance their knowledge about legal matters which they come across in their work. For those who possess a First Degree from a recognised University, the two-year graduate route is an option to learn the law.
The University of London is one of the United Kingdom’s world class Universities and several of its colleges including the King’s College, the University College of London (UCL) , the London School of Economics (LSE), Queen Mary, SOAS and Birkbeck are ranked among the top Universities in that country, for Law. Academic direction for the Laws Programme is provided by these six Colleges of the University of London.
The CfPS Law School has many students studying law, ranging from young school leavers to those in different professions. Apart from the compulsory subjects, the Law School offers a number of optional subjects including Commercial Law, Company Law, Intellectual Property Law, International Protection of Human Rights, Family Law, European Union Law, Property Law, Administrative Law, Equity and Trust, Public International Law and Criminology.
Alumni of CfPS Law School are today practicing lawyers while others are working in international organisations and public and commercial establishments.
CfPS Law School boasts of an outstanding and qualified lecture panel which included academics and practitioners. CfPS students have a range of activities at the CfPS Law School intended to improve the skills of students including their soft skills. These include mooting and debating as well as a series of guest lectures conducted by several well-known personalities.
The CfPS Law School also has an internship programme where its second and third year students were placed in the chambers and offices of several President’s Counsel and Senior Attorneys-at-Law, to enable them to gain a hands on experience in legal work.
Students also visit Courts which enable them to understand the legal process at first hand. The CfPS also conducts a Legal Skills Programme and an Introduction to the Laws Programme for its students.
