The Cabinet has turned down a proposal by the Education Ministry to recruit retired teachers on contract basis, and instead offered an alternative scheme. The Cabinet wants the Education Ministry to recruit teachers via the Provincial Councils and the Education Ministry instead of considering retired teachers.

The Cabinet will be giving permission next week to make the required recruitment.

Some 26,000 vacancies for teachers exist in GCE (A/L) classes.

The Education Ministry had sought cabinet approval for their proposal in order to ensure the smooth functioning of schools.

The teacher recruitment programme was affected due to a string of court cases related to teacher recruitment.

The recruitment programme is due to commence in about two weeks. Some 5,000 teachers are to be recruited.

The Provincial Councils will be allowed to recruit according to their financial capacity.- DWI
