Wildlife officials are seeking the help of foreign veterinary surgeons for the further treatment of tusker Agbo, which is recovering from gunshot injuries it suffered at Thirappane in Anuradhapura.

The Wildlife Department’s veterinary surgeon, Dr. Tharaka Prasad, told the Sunday Times that the latest x-ray reports show about 60 to 70 percent recovery and there was no shrapnel in the body but would require further treatment as there were fractures in the carpal bones of the front left leg. It would take at least six months for full recovery, he said.

He said the request for foreign assistance would be sought through the Foreign Ministry.

Dr. Prasad said there were practical difficulties in treating the animal as it could not be sedated. He said the vets would track down the animal in the jungle and provide the required treatment.

Villagers and well-wishers feed the elephant, which has now become accustomed to consuming the food provided. “For the time being, that would be the best, as the movement of the elephant would be curtailed,” he said.

The Wildlife Department has been taking care of the animal since June, after it was found with injuries caused by a trap gun.

A team of officials, including Dr. Chandana Jayasinghe, in charge of the Anuradhapura division, have been closely following the movements of Agbo to treat the animal on the move.
