A school in Polkotuwa, Beruwala is severely affected by the prevailing rains.

The school’s classroom floors are covered in rainwater, due to the dilapidated state of the roofs.

WP/KL Beruwala Roman Catholic Junior School educates about 300 children of diverse ethnicities and religions and has grades from 1-10.

The students have no alternative but to hold umbrellas while learning. As a result the students are more focused on staying dry rather than focusing on their studies.

A number of basins have been placed at various points of the classrooms and on top of student desks to prevent flooding.

On some days, students can be seen clenching books to their chests in order to prevent them from getting drenched.
