The film ‘Bawa: the Genius of the Place’, a cinematic voyage that takes the viewer to the heart and soul of five major buildings by the master of Tropical Modernism, will start screening on September 8 at the Scope Cinema.

Unlike they were captured ever before, the film by Afdhel Aziz depicts and documents the magic of Lunuganga estate with its faded Italian walls and sculpture against lush tropical bounty and Dutch quaintness; the splendour of Red Cliffs that inspired a much- anthologised poem by Michael Ondaatje where the house becomes an open pavilion on the same level as the sea; and the Ena de Silva House which was one of the first upper class demesnes to welcome back the inner courtyard, pettagamas and traditional batik.

The other two buildings are just as iconic: the Lighthouse Hotel which is a romantic seaside idyll and Kandalama- the ultimate wilderness hotel clothed in jungle.

With eagle’s eye views and insight and vantages never explored, the film captures the essence of Bawa: his genius of reacting uniquely and perfectly to each and every space.

Happening after two sold-out charity events, the tickets for this general release will be available from September 5.
