‘The Trouble with Laki’ screening at the Wendt on Wednesday
A crested hawk eagle lands on a high perch; a glittering turquoise kingfisher slices the water for a silvery fish…
We are in idyllic Diyabubula – Laki Senanayake’s hideout where he loved to lounge dishabille, with Dr. Martin Pieris’s new 40-minute film capturing the man neatly.
Titled, ‘The Trouble with Laki’, it portrays how his trouble was versatility. While Laki would laughingly call himself a ‘jack of all trades’, in the film Ismeth Raheem touches on the tragic aspect of ‘pursuing different ideas at the same time’ which made his work ‘fragmented’.
The film winds through Laki’s happy-go-lucky journey, spotlighting all major aspects – from his ‘first owls’ to ‘inventing Batik’ with Ena de Silva, stopping by the Bo leaf of the Osaka Expo, his art (erotic as well as natural) and a medley of things that made up his chequered life.
Consisting of footage taken for his PhD by Martin, the film is a poignant tribute with atmosphere.
The Trouble with Laki will be screened at the Lionel Wendt on Wednesday, September 6, at 6.30 p.m
