While the Australian tea market revenue reached US$ 400 million so far in 2023 and is expected to grow at 4.27 per cent annually, tea businesses in Australia are looking to potentially diversify in Sri Lanka, an Australian delegate told the Business Times.

Sara Stewart, Director of the Aboriginal Economic Development Group in Victoria, Australia is currently in Sri Lanka together with an 11-member Australian delegation exploring the trade industries and opportunities available in the food, textile and IT sectors in the country. A media briefing by the delegation was held at the Export Development Board (EDB) last Tuesday in Colombo.

Speaking to the Business Times on the sidelines of the media briefing, Ms. Stewart expressed interest in Sri Lanka as it is the first visit of the Aboriginal Economic Development Group in the country. She said, “We are exploring the industries and opportunities for trade relationships with Sri Lanka. We have some budding tea businesses that are looking to potentially diversify their businesses in Sri Lanka. We will go back to Australia, sit with the Sri Lanka and Australia Chamber of Commerce and understand the opportunities and possibilities that are available here in Sri Lanka.” The 11 delegates are from the tea, apparel and native foods and spices sectors while the chamber represents 600 businesses across all regions and industries in Australia, she added.

Sri Lanka and Australia Chamber of Commerce, President Kalum De Silva during the media briefing highlighted that the chamber is committed to linking the business communities of the two countries to encourage economic development, further fortifying and diversifying the strong cultural and diplomatic relationships that already exist. “This is the union of Australia’s First Nations people with the indigenous community of Sri Lanka and is a powerful testament to the enduring significance of indigenous cultures worldwide. As these two distinct yet spiritually connected communities converge, they weave a tapestry of shared wisdom, resilience, and a deep reverence for the land,” stated Mr. De Silva.

The delegation participated in discussions with the EDB, visited the Colombo Port City and undertook an IT sector tour at Hatch Incubator and Orion City IT Park. The delegation also took part in business to business meetings with key stakeholders across the food, textile, and IT sectors. They also visited the Kandy spice plantations and a quaint handloom textile village.
