Sri Lankan hotels face high staff turnover
The staff turnover in Sri Lankan hotels has become very high and is evident since most people started leaving the country following the economic collapse.
At least 10 per cent of the workforce are said to be leaving the industry today and this impact is felt in all hotels and across the board among all workers, Hoteliers Association President M. Shanthikumar told the Business Times on Thursday.
Workers across the board are said to be leaving the country and some are even moving out of the industry, he said.
Migrating for jobs in other countries or in other sectors has today become a day-to-day issue, he noted.
In this respect, the Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management (SLITHM) is working on attracting an increasing number of students to the institute and thereby provide jobs in hotels.
Mr. Shanthikumar noted that there are always about 10-12 vacancies in hotels at any given time and also there are similar numbers joining the sector as well.
At present despite the increasing number of tourists visiting the country, Mr. Shanthikumar noted that the situation is at a manageable level as it creates more employment opportunities as well.
At present hotels have revised salaries of the staff due to the high cost of living and noted “we have to look into their welfare as they are the biggest asset”.
Staff strength totals around 600,000 across Sri Lanka with the turnover at about 10 per cent.
