Education Minister Susil Premajayantha, on Friday, said that the GCE Advanced Level Examination due to be held later this year will not be postponed, despite some requests.

Minister Premajayantha told Education Times that the ministry had reviewed the completion of the syllabus and found that there had been 343 days to complete the syllabus. He said usually the maximum is 360 days and the minimum is 300 days.

He added that they had made inquiries from the provinces and found that 80 per cent of schools have completed the syllabuses.

The Minister said that some 330,000 students are due to sit the examination, and of them only some 50,000 have called for the postponement of the examination.

He said that there were others who had called the Examinations Department asking to conduct the examination on schedule.

He said the decision to hold the examination later this year would help to balance the examinations calendar which had been disrupted in the past few years.

If the exam is not held this year, the ministry would not be able to restore the examination calendar even by next year which would have an impact on 4.4 million students, he stressed.

“This would also impact students waiting to enter universities,” he added.

Examinations Department Commissioner General Amith Jayasundara said that this was the best opportunity to correct the examination calendar.

Meanwhile, several students have pointed out that they needed more time to complete the syllabuses as most schools have not been able to complete the syllabuses due to a range of issues including a shortage of teachers and disruption of academic activities.
