The ‘Akura’ school management system has been introduced to Al Hambra Maha Vidyalaya in Aluthgama, by its Old Boys’ Association. Akura is a cloud-based school management system that provides administrative and communications assistance between school administrations, teachers, students, and parents. It facilitates transparent communications between parents and teachers and even provides an organised repository of student and teacher information – including the academic progress of students.

Parents stand to benefit significantly from this initiative. Daily student attendance updates are effortlessly conveyed to parents through SMS notifications. Smartphone users can delve even further by accessing their child’s attendance records and exam marks using a personalised username and password – a feature that Al Hambra Maha Vidyalaya parents say not only fosters parental involvement but also saves their time by reducing the number of physical trips they need to make to the school. While Akura is available to a few affluent schools in Colombo its technology has been largely inaccessible to schools in the more rural areas, making this an important step in the technological development of those schools.

The Akura system has earned accolades from the school administration for its swift and effective information dissemination to higher authorities. Principal Mrs Fazliya Fassy commended its pivotal role in facilitating administrative decision-making, streamlining reporting processes, and enhancing overall planning within the school. She emphasised that: “the Akura technology has proven to be a transformative addition to our school’s ecosystem,” further adding, “Its remarkable efficiency in data management and provision of real-time insights has undeniably raised the standard of our operational efficiency.”

Mrs Faroosa Shakeel, Vice Principal and the driving force behind the implementation of the Akura system expressed her enthusiasm for the promising potential it unlocks. Mrs Faroosa firmly believes that the Akura system fosters an environment of collaboration and progress, stating, “Our educators now possess a powerful tool at their disposal to monitor and guide each student’s growth. This technology empowers us to tailor our teaching methods to individual needs with unprecedented effectiveness.”

Beyond the school’s boundaries, the impact of the Akura system has resonated positively with thrilled parents who are echoing their appreciation for its user-friendly interface and real-time updates. One parent shared their experience, saying, “I now feel more connected to my child’s education. The convenience of checking attendance and exam results from my phone is a game-changer.” -TW
