The postal service in Sri Lanka has a proud history spanning more than 200 years.
Having first begun during colonial rule, the Postal Department is today one of the oldest government departments in the country, with more than 17,000 employees serving in various capacities.
One of the most iconic symbols of Sri Lanka Post is the postboxes that are found in all parts of the island.
The postboxes are mostly red, but there are green and blue ones as well.
The Postal Department’s head office in Colombo has some of the oldest post boxes on display.
Some of the post boxes dating back to British colonial rule can still be found at various locations around the city and are still in use.
The age and condition of a postbox does not matter to employees of the Postal Department.
They will continue obtaining mail from it as long as it is in use by the public.
While email and other forms of electronic messaging have gradually taken over, there is still a place for ‘snail mail,’ and so those old postboxes will continue to remain, providing a silent but valuable service to the people, as they have done for so many years.
