Ranindu Dilshan Liyanage earned the esteemed title of International Master (IM) after the conclusion of the 29th Abu Dhabi International Chess Festival – Masters’ event held in the UAE. With unwavering dedication and exceptional skill, Ranindu emerged as an ELO 2400+ player, marking his ascent to the ranks of International Masters. Notably, his performance in this event also earned him his maiden Grand Master Norm, a testament to his remarkable capabilities.

The 29th Abu Dhabi International Chess Festival – Masters’ event stands as one of the most prestigious competitions on the global chess stage, attracting the finest players from around the world. Took place at the Radisson Blu Hotel and Resort in Abu Dhabi Corniche, this event served as a platform for the convergence of top talents.

Ranindu, with an initial ELO rating of 2359, commenced the event ranked 106th. However, his exceptional display of strategic prowess and unyielding determination propelled him to secure an impressive 16th position by the conclusion of the event. In a remarkable achievement, he not only ranked amongst the top Grand Masters but also emerged unbeaten throughout the entirety of the competition.

Ranindu’s performance in this event showcased his exceptional skill as he went head-to-head with some of the world’s best players. Over the course of nine intense rounds, he engaged in five matches with Grand Masters, securing three valuable points. Additionally, his encounters with International Masters yielded another three points, underscoring his consistent excellence.

Ranindu pursued his interest in chess in 2009 when he was studying in primary grades at the Asoka Primary School in Kalagedihena, Gampaha. He then moved to Ananda College in Grade 3. He was coached by veteran national chess player Suneetha Wijesuriya at Ananda College. He was later coached by Sri Lankan international chess grandmaster Romesh Weerawardane in 2013.
