The International ADR Centre will hold its annual Mediation Symposium for the second consecutive year on September 26.

The event under the theme “Mediation – The smart option for Commercial Dispute Resolution” will feature discussions on the value of mediation for dispute resolution and the global developments to support the use of mediation for many categories of disputes including domestic commercial disputes, cross border trade disputes and Investor disputes.

The Symposium will also feature a demonstration of a mediation that will highlight the intrinsic features of the mediation process and the skills and techniques used by mediators in a totally non adversarial and non-coercive manner to assist disputants to reach a solution that’s acceptable to them, the organisers said in a media release.

The sessions will feature discussions on global and regional developments that have responded to the increasing use of mediation as the preferred method of choice; the steps that Sri Lanka needs to take to establish a comprehensive eco system for the use of mediation for commercial disputes and the legislation currently being formulated for this purpose. Many countries in the region have already enacted legislation and established centres for the use of mediation and have made significant progress in institutionalizing mediation. Singapore, Hong Kong, India are some countries in the forefront. If Sri Lanka is to emerge as an investment friendly country, it’s essential that its contract enforcement regime is improved. Providing services for the use of mediation for dispute resolution, is a vital need.

The Symposium is supported by The Asia Foundation with funding by the United Nations Development Programme’s flagship ‘Support to Justice Sector Project (JURE)’, funded by the European Union.
