Private hospitals outcry over doctors’ migration
Private hospitals have joined the criticism over the migration of medical consultants and practitioners. Soon there is going to be a dearth of doctors and it’s already happening in the country, one official noted.
“Many medical consultants and practitioners are leaving the country and we need to bring down more doctors from overseas. The Sri Lanka Medical Council and the Ministry of Health must take prompt measures to address this issue and allow foreign doctors to come to Sri Lanka, at least from the neighbouring countries. The ministry must allow not only specialists, but anyone with a basic medical degree to come to Sri Lanka, as mostly every aspect of the medical fraternity is facing a shortage of hands,” the chairman of a leading private hospital in Colombo told the Business Times on Friday.
“We are also encouraging more private medical colleges to be established in Sri Lanka. Some of the doctors who have left the country for post graduate training are not coming back to Sri Lanka. They have received scholarships from the government institutions and opt to stay overseas without returning to the country,” he stressed.
