The Colombo Philharmonic Choir conducted by Harin Amirthanathan presents, “Sure on this shining night”, an evening of songs through the ages -today, Sunday, September 17 at 6 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Scots Kirk, Colombo 3.
The choir will be accompanied by Dilan Angunawela on piano and Tamara Holsinger on cello.
The concert celebrates and reflects on the beauty of light, night and love.

“These beautiful lines from ‘Sure on this shining night,’ by poet James Agee, set to music by Morten Lauridsen served as inspiration for this concert. The harmonies and lyrics weave motifs of night and romantic love into one integrated choral cycle,” Harin said.
“The concert will open with Elgar’s joyous and life-affirming work for chorus and piano, From the Bavarian Highlands, op. 27, which will lift your spirits, followed by Brahms’ evocative Sechs Quartette, Op. 112a,” he added.
The second half of the concert includes works by award-winning composers such as Eric Whitacre, Ola Gjielo& Dan Forrest; the modern staple of choirs around the world, compositions which will, for the most part, be premiered in Sri Lanka by the Colombo Philharmonic Choir.
Rachmaninoff’s “Vocalise” Op. 34, No. 14 for Cello and Piano, the universally loved ‘song without words’, has been included with Tamara Holsinger, principal cellist of the Symphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka.
Entrance is by programme priced at Rs. 1500 available at the door.
